Admirador de Edgar Allan Poe y muy amigo de Charles Baudelaire, Luis-Charles Barbara puede ser considerado como un verdadero precursor del género: mete en escena el crimen misterioso, utiliza a un juez como protagonista y aporta una moderna reflexión sobre el crimen inexpiable. Esta novela febril y sensible fue llevada a teatro como melodrama en cinco actos representado por primera vez en el Théâtre de la Gaîté el 29 de mayo de 1858.
